Sacramento, CA – The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) in California today announced its 700,000-member organization’s support for four measures on the November 2022 General Election ballot.

David Huerta, President of SEIU California and SEIU-USWW (United Service Workers West) made the following statements regarding the endorsed measures:

Prop 1, The California Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment

“When fundamental human rights are under attack, SEIU members fight back. The rogue Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade was more than an attack on women’s rights – it was an attack on everything we stand for as SEIU members: justice, freedom, safety, and inclusion for women, people of color, and the LGBTQIA+ community. We’ll do everything in our power to ensure California protects the right to reproductive freedom in our state’s constitution because we know the impact of overturning Roe v. Wade will fall hardest on Black and Brown people already experiencing the impact of structural racism with low-wage jobs and lack of access to health care and child care. We’ll show the nation this November that the pathway to justice and equity is built worker by worker and voter by voter.”

Prop 28, The Arts and Music in Schools – Funding Guarantee Accountability Act

“SEIU school workers know that great schools support every aspect of a child’s needs and foster every aspect of their potential. Too often, children in Black and Brown communities have been denied opportunities to flourish through arts and music education because of deep cuts to these critical programs made over decades, cuts that have hit our communities the hardest. We strongly support funding arts and music education to unlock the creative talents of every child, regardless of where they grow up.”

Prop 29, The Protect the Lives of Dialysis Patients Act

“Greedy dialysis corporations continue to put patients at risk just to line their executives’ pockets, taking advantage of the 80,000 people in California who have end-stage renal disease and need dialysis three times a week, every week, just to stay alive. SEIU members know this important proposition will save lives and protect patients and staff. California must bring reform to an industry that clearly won’t make the vital changes needed until voters force them to.”

Prop 31, Yes to Protect Kids

“YES on Prop 31 will finally protect kids from the candy-flavored products Big Tobacco uses to lure them into a lifetime of addiction to nicotine. We know tobacco companies deliberately target young people, especially in Black and Brown neighborhoods, with flavors like cotton candy, chocolate, and minty-menthol that mask the harsh taste of tobacco – making it easier to start and harder to quit. SEIU members stand up to bullies everywhere, including Big Tobacco with its racist targeting of our communities. We strongly support YES on 31, which will save lives by ending the sale of candy-flavored tobacco, including menthol cigarettes, for good.”
