SAN JOSE, Calif. – Thousands are expected at a rally at the South Bay Labor Council as its executive board meets July 11 to vote on a strike sanction supporting Santa Clara County workers.
Contract negotiations between SEIU Local 521 workers and Santa Clara County began in May with the county seeking $53 million in concessions. Yet, the county’s recently approved contract with a management group included only $13 million in cuts. Adjusted for size of workforce, SEIU workers would be shouldering a disproportionate share of concessions, contrary to the county’s promise that cuts would be equally shared.
“We are not asking for raises,” said Rachelle “RJ” Davis, a janitor at Valley Medical Center. “But we do expect fairness. The county has not budged from its initial $53 million proposal and it is just too steep. When managers who make twice what we make end up with a smaller share of cuts, that’s just not right.”
