Members of the SEIU 521 union are set to vote to ratify the Tentative Agreement Starting on Monday, November 18.

San Mateo County, Calif – The union representing over 2,000 county workers including healthcare administrators, IT, assessors, libraries and call center staff among others reached a Tentative Agreement with the County of San Mateo on a new 3-year successor labor contract.

The Tentative Agreement, which is pending ratification by union members and the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors includes the largest annual wage increases for county workers in over two decades – 14% over 3 years, with an additional 1% increase in the third year of the contract contingent upon the Vehicle License Fee (VLF) adjustment. Over the life of the contract, workers represented by SEIU 521 would see a 15% total wage increase.

The agreement adds Cesar Chavez Day (March 31), as a new paid holiday, beginning in March 2025. In addition, workers secured additional floating paid wellness days, increases to bilingual and on-call pay, and significant County contribution increases to healthcare insurance plans.

“Throughout these negotiations, our members were focused on bringing forth solutions that enable us as county workers to best serve our San Mateo County residents and the needs of our community,” said Mercedes Segura, SEIU 521 Chapter Chair. “This agreement is an investment toward improving county services and staffing, and lays the foundation to continue positioning San Mateo County as the best place to live, work, and raise our families.”

A ratification vote by union members of the SEIU Local 521 is set to begin on Monday, November 18, followed by a ratification period by the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors.
