SALINAS, Calif. – Turning over all stones in their quest to find budget solutions for the county, Monterey County employees have reached a boulder that just won’t move: the county itself.
County leaders are insisting that jobs and services have to go, even at the cost of significant loss of quality services and county jobs. SEIU Local 521 members will address the board of supervisors today to insist that other options be explored. These include:
- Changing accounting practices for vacant positions: Minimum of $10 million savings
- Centralizing human resources: $6.5 million savings
- Keeping WIB services in house: $900,000 savings
- Suspending vacation buy-out: $1.5 million savings
- Reducing reliance on temporary agencies: unknown millions in savings
County workers have offered to do their fair share, but the county instead is demanding $11 million a year in concessions that are not tied to saving services.
