San José, CA – Our Lady of La Vang Parish presents the annual Health Fair featuring educational workshops to improve community health, and cultural performances to celebrate cultural diversity. CommUniverCity San José partners with Our Lady of La Vang Parish, Foothill Community Health Center, Covered California, Community Health Partnership, Asian Americans for Community Involvement (AACI), Asian Pacific Islander Justice Coalition, SIREN (Services, Immigrants Rights and Education Network), and SEIU Local 521 to host presentations to empower the community on understanding the new health insurance marketplace Covered California and the impact of the Affordable Care Act on the immigrant community.
WHEN: Saturday Sept. 14, 2013
TIME: 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

The Health Fair starts at 9:00 A.M. with an Opening Prayer with Rev. Loi Huynh of Our Lady of La Vang Parish at the Main Stage. Our Lady of La Vang Parish, Foothill Community Health Center and EyeQ Optometry will provide free flu shots and free medical screenings for blood pressure, diabetes, dental, and vision from 9:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M.
At 11:00 A.M., Gilead Sciences will present a workshop in Vietnamese on Hepatitis B in room Lecture 1. From 10:45 A.M. to 3:00 P.M., there will be cultural performances from the Vietnamese and Latina/o communities, beginning with Zumba exercise. During the Health Fair, there will be a raffle with prizes and free lunch. This Health Fair is open to all community members.
Health, Insurance, and You
Attendees will have a chance to learn about “Health, Insurance, and You,” a presentation by Covered California and SEIU Local 521. Spanish and Vietnamese translation will be offered. The Covered California booth will be at the Health Fair to answer questions about the new health insurance marketplace. Following this presentation, the Foothill Community Health Center will present on Income Eligibility for Medi-Cal. They will also have a booth at the Health Fair for follow-up questions.
Affordable Care Act and Immigrants
From 12:00 P.M. to 1:00 P.M. and from 1:00 P.M. to 2:00 P.M., Community Health Partnership and SIREN will present a workshop on “Affordable Care Act & Immigrants,” with Vietnamese translation in room Lecture 1. A workshop in Spanish will be held in room Lecture 2.
