State-wide coalition presses Rep. McCarthy to support immigration reform
Rally and press conference July 11
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – One day after the National Republican Party holds a meeting in Washington, DC to discuss immigration reform, the California Table, a state-wide coalition of more than 56 independent organizations, including faith-based, labor, college, immigrant and civil rights, and ally groups, will hold a strategy meeting in Bakersfield and call on Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-23) to report back and act to pass immigration reform. The Kern Coalition for Citizenship will host the gathering.
The California Table has promised to hold Rep. McCarthy’s “feet to the fire” on immigration reform given the changing demographics in his district. McCarthy is one of 15 republican members of Congress who will be pressured with ongoing and increasingly boisterous actions until they decide to support immigration reform.
In June, the U.S. Senate passed immigration reform legislation, but partisan politics and procedural obstructions are threatening prospects for a simple vote in the U.S. House of Representatives.
Immigration reform advocates are calling on Congress to act on behalf of a growing majority of voters by passing a comprehensive solution to fix our broken immigration system – one that raises the quality of jobs for all workers, keeps families together, and creates a realistic roadmap for aspiring citizens.
