SEIU 521 Fights Back To Defend Medicaid, Healthcare & Our Jobs

In order to pay for massive tax cuts that would benefit billionaires, Congress and the Trump Administration want to take healthcare away from working families and scapegoat the poor and the people who rely on Medicaid (Medi-cal). Federal and local government workers and community programs keep this country running. Elon Musk and the Trump Administration are attempting to take control of the federal government—gutting public services, dismissing civil servants, and shifting power to billionaires like himself. It’s unlawful. It’s dangerous. And we won’t let it happen. Halting funding and mass government layoffs means shuttering services that millions rely on, such as homeless shelters, local road repair projects, food aid, and disaster relief. This hurts us all.
Medicaid is the largest health insurance program in the country, providing healthcare to more than 80 million people, including nearly 40 percent of our nation’s children. 77% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Medicaid. Medicaid covers almost one in four Americans – seniors, kids, working moms and dads, veterans, people of color, rural Americans, and people with disabilities.
Medicaid funds the jobs of healthcare and social service workers like us who care for our loved ones in hospitals, nursing homes, and childcare. Federal Medicaid funding plays a major role in state budgets and supporting services you may not even know about – like special education, care for foster kids, and mental health services.
Medicaid Saves Lives – Medicaid covers one in five Americans – seniors, veterans, kids, working moms and dads, people of color, rural Americans, and people with disabilities. It funds the jobs of healthcare workers who care for our loved ones in hospitals, nursing homes, and in their own homes and communities. Medicaid funding is also an important part of state budgets and covers things you may not even think about – like special education, care for foster kids, and mental health services.
What Do Cuts Mean for Our Jobs?
Every worker represented by our union, SEIU 521 has a stake in this fight.
Cuts to healthcare and social services jobs. Reducing Medicaid funding would lead to major cuts for hospitals, clinics and government social services, worsening existing staff shortages. Some facilities that rely on Medi-Cal could be forced to close.
Longer wait times and less access to care. With fewer workers and facilities and less funding, patients would wait longer for treatment or be denied care altogether.
Higher costs for everyone. Insurance companies would face higher expenses and pass those costs to employers and individuals, leading to increased premiums and medical expenses.
