Santa Clara County, Commit to Equity: NO LAYOFFS, NO CUTS!

Cuts to essential public services are not the answer

SEIU 521 members have always provided quality, essential public services and have met the moment, working on the front lines during the pandemic to ensure the health, safety, equity, and inclusion for all communities. This pandemic has created new opportunities for how we provide essential services to our community and exposed the devastating health and economic consequences when we don't invest in public health, education, infrastructure, and safety net systems. There is irrefutable evidence this pandemic is impacting our communities of color the most severely.
It is more important than ever that we take the time and steps necessary to exhaust all opportunities to avoid layoffs, furloughs, or cuts that will further negatively impact the most vulnerable communities. The Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors must now meet the moment as well and lead in making thoughtful and critical decisions in how we resolve a budget crisis while keeping quality public services, maintaining the health and safety of the public, and ensuring racial equity and inclusion are at the forefront. Cuts are not the answer and we can work through this together, but we must not rush decisions that will hurt our community and our workforce.
We, the undersigned, demand no layoffs and no cuts until we find common solutions to the budget crisis impacting the County.
