March 20 - More than 100 SEIU 521 members came to a town hall in Bakersfield, Fresno and San Jose on Saturday to interview candidates running for statewide offices. The unprecedented town hall, video-linked at 11 SEIU sites, drew 2,000 working men and women to the members-only forum.

While unreliable state politicians and an ineffective Governor create a gridlock nightmare in Sacramento, we are suffering from cuts to public services, high unemployment, and a weak economy. Frustrated, 100 SEIU members participated in the February 2 candidate's forum in Salinas in effort to put State Legislative candidates in the hot seat.

Franz Criego Wins Seat on Fresno County Retirement Board!


Our candidate for the Fresno County Employees Retirement Association, Franz Criego, soundly defeated nine other candidates to win a seat on the retirement board. With Criego's win, SEIU 521 members have effectively clinched the three elected positions on the board. The other two seats are currently held by SEIU members James Hackett and Eulalio "Larry" Gomez.

June 27 - Taking a stand against the governor's proposed budget cuts that call for sacrifices only from the weakest, Tulare County residents, workers and activists staged a mock funeral on Saturday to mourn the state's health safety net on the brink of death.

Here in California, we continued to build a stronger majority in the legislature supportive of working families, and locally we helped elect working-family friendly candidates.
